Nut slots...not a medical condition as you may have supposed but in reality something vital to ease of playing on any guitar.

A lot has been written about the height of guitar bridge saddles relative to ease of playing.  Frequently the height of the strings at the nut is not considered, though it is of paramount importance for ease of playing.

Think of a tightrope - the rope is tight at either end and slack in the middle just like the strings on your guitar; so when you press your finger down at the first fret a high slot will create a horrendous amount of tension.

Assuming that your guitar has a correctly adjusted saddle height and truss rod, press your finger down at the first fret, feel the tension and look at how much the string has to travel to touch the fret. The amount of travel should be as little as possible while still allowing the string to vibrate freely without rattling on the fret. The distance may vary from string to string as each string is a different thickness and tension, the sixth often needs a little more clearance than the others. For this reason, and as each guitar is unique even among batches of the same make and model, I am not giving you any measurements.

Its best to take your instrument to your local guitar tech for this work as special files are needed to lower the slots and to ensure the correct width so strings are not pinched.

Happy playing this month especially if you get your nut slots sorted!
