Evans Snare Drum Heads

A crisp and responsive snare drum is at the heart of a good kit sound and is the driving force behind a players technique.  Every drummer is different and they need to find the snare drum sound, and skin, to suit their character of playing.

Some players prefer a simple coated skin, and we would recommend that they use the Genera G1 or G2 which we have listed in the Tom-Tom range, however Evans have developed a series of specialist skins that can really help a drummer with sound, technique and durability.

Power Center £13.50
The power dot at the heart of the PC head -ok, so its not that clear, but have you ever tried photographing a drum head! These standard heads are made from a single skin that has been reinforced in the centre where the stick falls most. The resulting head can be played hard with greater confidence in the durability. The Power Center Dot has slotted "perforations" cut into it to keep the sound open and the feel as responsive as you would find on a conventional single-skin head.

Reverse Dot £13.50
The Power Center dot on this head is mounted underneath the skin leaving the top surface clear, making it ideal for those who use brushes a great deal or who like the flexibility of using the whole head surface.  The reinforcement gives greater power in the sound and vastly better durability when compared with a normal head.

Genera £16.00
A single ply head made from Evans famous "Genera" weight film.  A damping ring is mounted around the rim on the underside, held firm within the rim binding.  It  damps the resonance to give a more focussed sound, yet floats with the skin to give a smooth even response and a clear rimshot.

Genera Dry £16.00
Dry vents in a ring towards the edge of the skin (the two litle dots!) As the Genera above, but with the addition of dry vents (tiny holes) drilled through the skin to eliminate stray harmonics and enable the skin to flex more.  The result is a tighter more focussed sound.

Genera HD (Heavy Duty) £17.00
A robust two-ply head with the addition of a damping ring, as on the Genera head.  The sound is more powerful yet focussed and a little brighter.  With the great variety of tone possible from this head, over a wide range of tunings, this is an ideal studio head.

Genera HD (Heavy Duty) Dry £17.00
As the Genera HD above, but with the addition of dry vents. It has the "necessary crack to wedge through overdriven guitars and keyboards".

Super Tough £14.00
Made from two layers of 7.5 mil film, this is a seriously thick and robust head, but what a sound!  Bright, open and clean, with great response and huge volume!

Super Tough Dry £15.00
As the ST above, but with the addition of dry vents to reduce unwanted higher harmonics.   A huge and controllable dynamic range, without loss of tone, yet bright and cutting.

Snare Side Resonant Hazy 300 £11.00
A perfect snare head, or as near to at as you can get!  Thin and light, this nearly clear head gives a crisp snare sound that enhances any batter head.  It does the job better than any other, what more can we say?

Buying advice

These are all good skins and the makers, good though they are, use some weird language to distinguish between them!  We have tried to interpret this in a way that will enable you to make a sensible choice.  The "Power Centre" is a good basic skin, and excellent value - go for the reverse dot if you play jazz or orchestral styles.  The other heads are all exciting and if the description sounds good, go for it!

The chart below should help, and it includes the standard G1 and G2 from the tom-tom range.

How to use the Chart:

To determine which head will satisfy your sonic needs, you can use our Sound Spectrum Chart to define your signature sound in terms of tonal colour and sustain. Just use the two axi to pinpoint where you want your sound to be. Slide up and down for bright vs. warm, or right and left for openness vs. focus.
